Cathedral Boys' ChoirChoirs for Children

St Asaph Cathedral Choir dates back to the late 13th Century and today continues to play a significant role in both the liturgical and musical life of the Cathedral and Diocese.

St Asaph Cathedral Choir offers choristerships to boys between the ages of 7 and 13 years, and girls aged 8 to 16 years, who share a love of music.

Although previous musical training is not essential, the choir seeks to encourage those who are committed to fine music-making and giving of their best.

The choir sings regularly in the Cathedral and the choristers have appeared on national radio and television, both in live and recorded radio broadcasts, and have featured in two BBC TV Songs of Praise programmes recorded in the Cathedral.

The choristers led the music at the inauguration of Glyndwr University and have performed for HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall and HRH The Duke of Kent.

The choir has released two CDs, sung alongside The King’s Singers as part of the North Wales Music Festival and recently supplied the soloists for Mid Wales Opera’s production of Noye’s Fludde by Benjamin Britten, also at the Festival.

The Cathedral Boys rehearse twice weekly:

  • Monday:
    • 4.30pm to 6.00pm
    • Choral Evensong: 6.00pm to 6.45pm
  • Tuesday:
    • 4.30pm to 6.00pm

Boy trebles are admitted to the choir from age 7 and continue until their voices break.

Girls_Choir1.jpgThe Cathedral Girls Choir was established in 2003. The girls (age 9 to 16) come from far and wide, not just the St Asaph area. They have performed in concerts, visited parishes throughout the St Asaph Diocese and sing services regularly in the Cathedral. In a short time, they have made a valuable contribution to the life of the Cathedral.

They celebrated their tenth birthday in January 2013.

  • Wednesday:
    • 4.30pm to 6.00pm
  • Friday:
    • 4.30pm to 6.00pm
    • Choral Evensong: 6.00pm to 6.45pm

We are always pleased to hear from parents of any prospective child (boy or girl) interested in joining one of our Cathedral Choirs. Audition is through an informal voice trial with the Organist and Master of the Choristers.

Cathedral Layclerks

LayclerksThe Cathedral Layclerks provide alto, tenor and bass parts for both boys/girls choirs. They rehearse weekly.

All the choirs have varying Sunday commitments.

Gentlemen wishing to join one of our choirs or wishing to receive further details should contact the Organist and Master of the Choristers.

Voluntary Choir

VolChoirThe Cathedral Voluntary Choir is a new venture in the musical life of the Cathedral. This group is open to people of A-Level age and over.

The choir meets to rehearse on the first Sunday of each month at 2pm, then sings Choral Evensong at 3.30pm. Members stay for a brief rehearsal following the service to preview the next month’s music.

Entrance to the choir is by audition, for which potential members will be asked to demonstrate a good singing voice and competent level of sight reading.
